Our dogs are Alaskan Huskies and Siberian Huskies. We breed most of the dogs ourselves and mostly for our own personal use. The kennel consists of about 50-55 dogs including yearlings and retired ones. Most of the dogs live outside in pens and everyone has its own dog house to sleep in, but old ones and puppies usually stay with us in the house.
To be a part of the team and help to pull the sled is of great happiness to these dogs. You cannot be mistaken of the joy and anticipation they show when they are harnessed in front of the sled. The dogs, which are left at home this time, show their disapproval with melancholy howling.
The young dogs are trained to pull when they are about 10-12 months old and at about two years of age they are ready to work full time in the team. It is not unusual to find 10 year old dogs in the team. They can be a part of the team as long as they want and are healthy. As they get older and retire from work, they move into the house to live with us.
The dogs are fed once or twice a day with a mixture of minced raw meat from offal and dry food. The quality of the food is very important as they need a lot of energy during the winter season. It is also important to make sure that they get enough water before a day’s work.
All our dogs love to be petted, but when they are harnessed and ready for today’s work and eagerly waiting to set off they do not have time for that. However, after the tour they will really appreciate a hug.
Alaskan Husky
Most of the dogs are Alaskan Huskies. As you can see from the name these dogs come from Alaska where they were cross bred with one purpose only - to have a sled dog as efficient as possible! The most important feature was and is the dogs' willingness and ability to work in front of the sled.
The Alaskan Husky is not approved by the Swedish Kennel Club and it has no written standard deciding what the dog should look like, which means that the size and body type may vary within the breed. Alaskan Huskies are available with any color of coat and eyes. Ears are usually erect, but hanging ears may occur. All our Alaskans are of polar type.
Siberian Husky
Our pure bred dogs are Siberian Huskies. It is a strong dog with a good staying power and ability to withstand coldness. The breed was brought as an endurance sled dog to Alaska from the Chukchi people in north eastern Siberia in the early 1900s.
The Siberian Husky is the fastest of the polar dog breeds and must absolutely be able to work as a sled dog. The breed is very active and has a great hunting instinct making it almost impossible to let it run loose in the woods.
Our Siberians are solely bred with the purpose to have the best working dog as possible which fits within the standard of the breed.
